Genus: Tobamovirus

Main host plants and diseases: SFBV naturally infected streptocarpus

plants. Prominent symptoms include flower breaking while foliar symptoms

are often lacking. Initial diagnostic tests indicated that this virus was a

member of the Tobamovirus genus.

Transmission: The virus could be transmitted mechanically to several test

plants. Its stability in plant sap was in line with that of other tobamoviruses,

i.e. infectivity was lost after 10 min incubation at 90 °C and after dilution to

10⁻⁸.

Sensitivity: Sensitivity of the ELISA is very high. The virus can be consistently detected in infected plant tissues diluted at 1:810 - 2430.

Reactivity: Reaction of the ELISA is very strong. Optical Density at 405 _nm is

in a range of 0.900 – 2.800 depending on the virus titer in the samples

tested.

Specificity: This test system has no cross reaction with healthy plant tissues

tested. Background is very low on the negative control wells.
