Genus: Ipomovirus Main host plants and diseases: SPMMV infects sweet potato showing mild leaf mottling and stunting in intolerant cultivars, but symptomless infection in others. Some cultivars are immune. Transmission: The virus is transmitted by a insect vector, whitefly (Bemisia tabaci, Aleyrodidae) in a persistent manner. Virus is also transmitted by mechanical inoculation and by grafting. It is not transmitted by contact between plants, and not transmitted by seed. Sensitivity: Sensitivity of the ELISA is relatively high. The virus can be consistently detected in infected plant tissues diluted at 1:90 - 1:810. Reactivity: Reaction of the ELISA is moderate strong. Optical Density at 405 nm is in a range of 0.300 – 1.300 depending on the virus titer in the samples tested. Specificity: This test system has no cross reaction with healthy plant tissues tested. Background is low on the negative control wells.
